Bookstore in Preserved Beijing City
Year: 2022
On the west side of Beijing’s central axis, amidst the rise of numerous modern reinforced concrete buildings, there are still several clusters of traditional hutongs (small alleys). These hutongs have a long history, showcasing the architectural character of old Beijing and offering a familiar, human-scaled street environment. Most importantly, these hutongs have served as living spaces for generations, preserving a vital aspect of life for Beijing residents.
The site is located south of Wansong Laoren Pagoda in Zhuangta Hutong, an area where traditional residential buildings coexist with commercial activity, blending modernity with history. The design aims to achieve a unity of form and construction logic while responding to the site’s unique character in a way that balances modernity and classicism. Viewing the pagoda serves as a key theme that runs throughout the entire design.
