Atelier with Four Walls and Four Columns

Year: 2025

This project explores a specific spatial typology, which could function as either a residence or an artist’s studio. The design focuses on two key spatial characteristics and expects to achieve both characteristics through a holistic and integrative approach:

1 Situated in a stunning landscape, this building requires optimal views in all directions; 2 The spaces on different floors demand varying levels of privacy.

The floor plans show that from the first to the third floor, the space gradually becomes more divided in three directions, while in one direction, it gradually becomes more connected. The third floor in the direction of increased connection is used as a rooftop terrace.

The design integrates these two needs through a clear and simple structural system. Three inverted triangular concrete walls, one upright triangular wall, three tension columns, and one compression column form the building’s structural framework. This arrangement keeps the structure internalized to maximize unobstructed views while creating a gradient of spatial separation between floors to meet functional requirements.

the foyer that connects the outdoor terrace with the indoor functional spaces. People can pause here to interact and pass messages with colleagues on either the ground floor or the second floor.

Four walls enclose a lightwell, providing natural light for the tea room and the restroom. The triangular gaps between the walls and floors allow visual connection between different levels.

Each wall gains stability through its connection with adjacent walls. The four walls form a stable structural system. The cast-in-place reinforced truss slab is supported by three tension columns and one compression column.
